The Ocean Park resort and amusement zone began as a small development by partners Abbot Kinney and Francis Ryan in the 1890s. After Ryan’s death in 1898, his share passed to Alexander Fraser, Henry Gage, and George Merrit Jones. As Kinney did not get along with his new partners, the land was divided, with Kinney taking possession of the undeveloped southern half of the tract. The three Ocean Park partners spent the next years adding attractions to the beachfront and pier. Built in 1905, the enormous bathhouse pictured here featured an indoor heated saltwater plunge.
